Book Reviews
I write a lot of book reviews on provocative nonfiction — books that focus on social, cultural, political and/or historical discussions, currents, moments and ideas. It’s enough of what I do in my free time that I dedicated this page to it.
I am also interested in finding new books and authors.
I’ve been reviewing books for some time and have done some book editing as well. Areas of review writing emphasis tend toward politics, race, post-colonial studies, cultural history and multidisciplinary studies. However, I am generally open to most nonfiction books, including biographies and autobiographies of engaging figures. I generally don’t review fiction, but will do so if I find something especially interesting.
Most of my reviews are posted at dotrad.com.
A common question I get asked is book recommendations. I could recommend a lot of books, but mostly I encourage people to simply harass others to read topical nonfiction and support independent publishers, retailers and bookstores. The book publishing business is brutal, and popular education about history, political science and more is lacking. Visit Indiebound’s independent bookstore locator and the Help Support Independent Publishers Facebook page to do your part.
I understand it is extremely difficult for authors of challenging nonfiction to get press for their work. If you are an author of the aforementioned kinds of materials, I am happy to take a look at a book for possible review. I can’t promise I can review everything, but I do my best.
